When Broken Glass Floats Book Review
Raziya Bryant
I recently read this book called When Broken Glass Floats by Chanrithy Him. This book was a very interesting book to read because it starts talking about her family that lived in Cambodia and how thier family was in a war called the Khmer Rouge. The girl named Athy was talking about the war and how she didn't like being in the war while her mom was ill and she couldn't walked and it was hard for her to take step by step. What I like about this book is that Athy started talking about Khmer Rouge war, what they did in the war. They had to pick crops and plant them everyday and they only can get a little of food per day. Athy and her family, had to go into this small part to go pick crops, but this other room these other family had to pick crops and for dinner they get a larger proportion of food but Athy didn't. I felt bad, when I was reading that book and I wanted to scream at someone at this one part, because when Athy mom named Mak she was walking really slow, and the leader of the Khmer Rouge told her to hurry up. Mak was still walking at a slower pace, so the leader got really mad and he forced her to walk faster and shoved her to hurry it up to go plant some crops. that part I wanted to do something to the leader about that because I felt so bad and Mak was so ill and sick.
I felt bad about different parts because some parts are sad and some parts are just painful and just wanted to like hit someone. Then that's how you would know that you had got in this book and you like the book. Then you can't stop reading the book and then you wanted to read the next book that's the same to this book.
For this book the only people I would recommend this book, are to 8th graders and adults that likes to read long, long books. That they can't stop reading this book that I read, because they like this book so much that you just have to read and the long chapters. which is about 8 pages long, which is pretty long. The reason why I didn't like this book, as much as I should have is because to me it was kind of bad and such a long book to read. It kinda of took me a long time just to finish the chapter was supposed to read. Then I couldn't really finish half of the chapters that I had to read for the literature circle homework. It was hard for me, to get into at some points and it was just taking forever to get to the point. Then I didn't want to read the book anymore because of that. It was just to long of a book for me because I not use to reading books like that. Then in some parts I was confused and didn't understand what they were saying. Because this book will start talking about how mid life then get into talking about the Khmer Rouge then talking different kinds of things then I will get confuse about that.
What would make this book better is at the middle to the end how they said Athy and her family that went to America and they had a good life there. Then it kind of let you hanging for moment.
For me I wanted to know what happened when she went to America, and what would she do when she is there. Then it had said some the things about Athy and her family maybe going to Cambodia something like that. After that moment wanted to know a little bit more without having to find out by yourself what happened. I don't like when books does that because you should read the book and know what's happening. Then you kind of what to know is Athy going to get married have kids maybe write a book about her life. Something because they just left you hanging at the end which isn't really good.
